Nurture Nature With Easy Care Native Plants
Presented by Master Gardener Ilona Ontscherenki at The Bethel

Pond Restoration: A Walk With Jean Epiphan
Our communal land in Mt Tabor requires our stewardship. We are focusing, in part, on our pond and woodland trail areas which are facing several serious threats. Restoring this area to health is no small task and requires both a long-term commitment as well as knowledge. We are fortunate to have Jean Epiphan, Agriculture & Natural Resources Agent and Assistant Professor, as well as ISA Certified Arborist NJ-1247A and Licensed Tree Expert #692 from the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Morris County guide us through some preliminary information, strategy, and tactics as well as offer her support.
Please join us in a casual walk around the pond and trail area to assess the current state of this area.
Please stay tuned to Facebook, signs posted around town, this site, and your email for more information and for the exact time of this walk-through which remains TBD.

Summer Garden Walk
Meet at the Bethel for another in a series of summer evening community garden walks. Destination TBD.

Field Trip: Foote's Pond
As we continue to gather knowledge and inspiration for better stewardship of our own community land, we endeavor to learn from those who’ve had success with similar projects. Susan and John Landau have been kind enough to offer a guided walk around their Foote’s Pond project in Morristown. If you are not familiar with this local project, please find more here: https://www.fofpw.org/
Susan and John will also be joining us for our July 8th pond and trail walk with Jean Epiphan.

Herb Garden at History House - Summer Evening Meet-up and Walk
Come give help and ideas at our newest project: the herb garden behind the history House. Then walk with us to see our other new club community gardens near Trinity Park and if time allows our projects at the pond and woodland.
Bring a drink and relax with your gardening community!

Pond Work Day
Last week, we cleared ten contractor bags full of garlic mustard before it could go to seed. We paved the way to identifying more native plants, more invasive species, and areas that we can begin to have a large impact.

Space Invaders! Work Day by the Pond
Work Day! Help to revitalize pond area by removing invasive garlic mustard before it goes to seed!
Garlic mustard is a very invasive weed. The roots exude a chemical that inhibits other plants from growing. It is a threat to a wide variety of our native plants and habitats.
If you join us, be mindful of the conditions and wear appropriate protection against ticks and poison ivy.
ALL HANDS ON DECK
Please pull this weed from your yard ASAP (this is the last week before it goes to seed; pulling will then spread seed.) This plant must be put into black trash bags: NOT COMPOSTED.
Stay tuned for more programming on invasives and revitalizing our pond and trail area. Please get in touch if this is of particular interest to you.

Lecture: Garden Design with Elizabeth Johnston of EJ Designs
Elizabeth Johnston is passionate about landscape design!
As an avid gardener , she spends many weekends wandering through Open Days private gardens, plant nurseries, garden centers and arboretums to learn more and more about trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and all things between.
She’s fascinated by new information and new plants that seem to pop up every season.
She embraces the idea that no property is perfect and meets the challenges of creating beautiful landscaping despite deer pressure, dampness, shade, heat, etc.
Providing information and/or a design for homeowners to use as a tool to accomplish a professional outcome to a landscape project is what EJ-Designs is about.

From Great Estates to Public Gardens
From Great Estates to Public Gardens Master Gardener
Please join us in the Bethel for this presentation by Rutgers Master Gardener Bill Moran
What may be a surprise to many Morris County residents is that within a short driving distance there are hundreds of public gardens. Most of them are free and offer an incredible variety of plants and designs. In some instances, these gardens were once part of a private estates and the original mansion may be open for viewing. This presentation covers a range of gardens from pocket size to multi-acre arboretums. Pictures are shown of each garden along with access information and the speaker’s highly subjective rating. A list of all local gardens will be distributed.
